If your bathroom smells like sewage, it’s not just an odor problem but also a safety issue. It could be full of gasses, like methane, that are hazardous to your health. There are a few sources of sewage smell.

1. Dry P-Trap

This problem usually happens in bathrooms that are rarely used. A full P-trap prevents sewage smells from coming out of your drains. If the P-trap is dry, it can’t do its job. The solution is to pour water down the sink so the P-trap fills with water.

2. Wax Ring Issue

There’s a wax ring at the base of your toilet that creates a seal between it and the drainpipe. It can become damaged if it wasn’t installed correctly. This results in water on the floor and a sewage smell. You need to remove the toilet and replace the ring.

3. Clogged Drain

Hair, soap scum, and other debris can clog pipes. A clogged pipe can emit a sewage smell into your bathroom. If you can’t remove the clog with a plunger, you’ll need to call a plumber. Using a liquid or crystal drain cleaner might not be a good idea, as these often cause even more unseen damages to your pipes.

Half Moon Plumbing of Owasso, OK, fixes clogged drains. We’re known for reasonable prices and flexible appointment scheduling.

4. Improperly Installed or Broken Vent Pipe

There’s a vent pipe that airs out your bathroom. If it’s installed incorrectly or gets damaged, it can cause a sewage smell in your bathroom. As the pipe is in the wall, you’ll need a plumber to remedy this situation.

5. Blocked Roof Vent

The roof vent can become clogged, causing odors in your bathroom. It can get clogged by snow, debris, or a bird building a nest. If you’re not comfortable climbing onto your roof, please call a professional.
