The Sherwin Miller Museum
Tulsa has several museums and The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art is one the city is proud to be home to. It is here the Jewish culture, heritage, and history are preserved. It is here the community is educated through collections of art and artifacts that aren’t found anywhere else in the country.The testaments these pieces display as a tribute to the Jewish citizens and their resiliency. With special exhibits, you can learn about these people and their unique history of survival. It is said that The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art is the Southwest’s largest collection and is the American Alliance of Museum accredited.Tulsa residents are proud to have another one of the country’s outstanding, renowned, museums here. To have the three main museums all accredited is a great honor, with each having their own high standards with public programs brings another level of excellence to the city.The Gershon and Rebecca Fenster Gallery was started in 1966 at B'nai Emunah synagogue. When renovations were started at the synagogue, the collection was moved to a warehouse and 10 years later, it reopened in a new location and under its current name, The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art.Today, with over 13,000 square feet, there is plenty of room to display the collection over 16,000 pieces. There are letters, paintings and a model synagogue that is furnished from the Beth Ahaba synagogue that is now closed.The entryway is lined with tall stained-glass windows, depicting biblical scenes, that came from a synagogue in downtown Houston Texas. On the lower level, there is a permanent Holocaust exhibit that has documents and photos from Oklahoma veterans that were part of liberating German concentration camps and Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany.The upper levels houses a permanent exhibit of art and artifacts that depict the 5,000-year history, starting with the pre-Canaanite era up to the settling of Oklahoma’s Jewish communities.
