How to Remove Rust Stains Yourself
It’s not uncommon for many people to see streaks of rust on things like their sinks, toilets and tubs. Not only is this unattractive, but it can get worse if not taken care of promptly. Fortunately, there may be some ways that you can remove these rust stains yourself.
Lemons or Limes
If you are looking for an easy way to get rid of rust stains, you might have something that you can use right inside of your refrigerator. Lemons and limes contain citric acid, and they can be fairly effective at getting rid of rust stains. For minor stains, you will need to cut the fruit in half, put baking soda or salt on the pulp, and rub it against the rust stain. If the stain is extensive, you can also try mixing baking soda and lemon juice to create a paste. Leave it on the rust for about an hour.
White Vinegar
Many people have found that they can successfully remove rust stains with white vinegar. If you want to use this method, pour the vinegar over the stain, and let it sit for a few minutes. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the rust. If this doesn’t remove the stain, you may want to let the vinegar sit on the stain for several hours before scrubbing the area again.
Cream of Tartar
If you are a baker, you may have a container of cream of tarter sitting in the back of your pantry somewhere. You can actually use it to remove rust in your toilets, sinks or tubs. All you need to do is sprinkle a small amount of it onto the stain. Add a few drops of water, and mix it around so that it creates a paste. Let it sit a few minutes before you scrub the stain. While rust stains are unsightly, you may be able to remove them yourself with some items that you already have on hand.
